Cox & Smith Risk Management (CSRM) is seeking experienced Loss Control Field Inspectors / Risk Control Consultants with Workers’ Compensation loss control experience and applicable state-specific qualifications, certifications, or credentials.
This independent contractor opportunity is designed for experienced loss control professionals who can conduct comprehensive Workers’ Compensation surveys and evaluate workplace safety, operational hazards, employee exposures, management controls, and loss prevention practices.

Position Summary
The Loss Control Field Inspector conducts on-site risk assessments for commercial insurance carriers. The inspector will evaluate an insured’s operations with a primary focus on Workers’ Compensation exposures, employee safety, regulatory compliance, and loss control practices.

Assignments may range from small commercial operations to complex manufacturing, construction, healthcare, hospitality, transportation, agricultural, and industrial risks.

Assignments may include Property, General Liability, Workers' Compensation, Commercial Auto, Inland Marine, Builders Risk, Products Liability, and other specialty coverages.

Inspectors must be capable of working independently, interviewing management, observing operations, identifying hazards and controls, and producing detailed reports that provide meaningful information for insurance underwriting and loss control purposes.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Conduct comprehensive on-site Workers’ Compensation loss control surveys.
  • Evaluate employee job duties, work processes, equipment, and occupational exposures.
  • Review workplace safety programs, policies, procedures, and employee training.
  • Evaluate management commitment to workplace safety and loss prevention.
  • Review accident investigation procedures, return-to-work programs, and claims-management practices when applicable.
  • Identify potential exposures involving falls, material handling, machinery, ergonomics, industrial hygiene, vehicle operations, and other occupational hazards.
  • Evaluate machine guarding, lockout/tagout, personal protective equipment, housekeeping, and other applicable safety controls.
  • Review contractor and subcontractor controls when applicable.
  • Evaluate construction and active jobsite safety exposures.
  • Interview owners, managers, safety personnel, supervisors, and employees as appropriate.
  • Develop practical and technically appropriate loss control recommendations.
  • Document findings with clear narratives and supporting photographs.
  • Provide an overall assessment of the insured’s safety practices and risk-management controls.
  • Complete detailed reports within established turnaround requirements.
  • Respond promptly to quality-control questions and requests for additional information.

State-Specific Workers’ Compensation Qualifications
Candidates must meet applicable state-specific requirements for performing Workers’ Compensation loss control or safety inspections in the states where they accept assignments.
Depending on the jurisdiction and assignment, this may include state-approved qualifications, certifications, registrations, professional designations, documented safety experience, or other carrier/regulatory requirements.

Applicants should clearly identify:
  • States in which they are qualified to perform Workers’ Compensation loss control surveys
  • Current state-specific certifications or credentials
  • Credential or certification numbers, when applicable
  • Expiration or renewal dates
  • OSHA and other safety certifications
  • Professional loss control or risk-management designations
  • Specialized industry qualifications

CSRM may require documentation of credentials before assigning work requiring a specific state qualification.

Preferred Experience & Credentials
Candidates should have substantial experience in Workers’ Compensation loss control, occupational safety, risk engineering, insurance loss prevention, industrial safety, or a closely related field.

Preferred credentials and experience may include:
  • State-specific Workers’ Compensation loss control qualifications
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
  • Associate Safety Professional (ASP)
  • Associate in Risk Management (ARM)
  • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH)
  • Construction safety experience
  • Industrial or manufacturing safety experience
  • Commercial insurance loss control experience
  • Risk engineering or occupational safety experience

Equivalent combinations of education, professional experience, certifications, and state-recognized qualifications will also be considered.

Independent Contractor Requirements
This is an independent contractor field opportunity. Inspectors manage their own schedules, travel, equipment, and assignment workload while meeting applicable CSRM and carrier service requirements.
Inspectors should have reliable transportation, a computer with internet access, a smartphone or suitable digital camera, strong written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to independently manage assignments and deadlines.
Assignment volume will vary based on geographic territory, carrier demand, inspector qualifications, credential requirements, and availability.

Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is an experienced Workers’ Compensation loss control professional who can go beyond completing a standard questionnaire.
We are seeking inspectors who understand how to observe an operation, identify employee exposures, evaluate existing controls, recognize deficiencies, ask appropriate follow-up questions, and clearly communicate the overall quality of the risk.
